J\u00f3zef Czapski: painting, drawing, diaries from the collection of the National Museum in Krakow, as well as the collections of Krystyna Zachwatowicz-Wajda and Andrzej Wajda, is the most complete presentation of J\u00f3zef Czapski\u2019s paintings at the J\u00f3zef Czapski\u2019s Pavilion.<\/p>\n
It consists of the following oil paintings (the first two are from the collection of the National Museum in Warsaw, the others from the National Museum in Krakow):\u00a0Self-portrait in a Mirror\u00a0(circa 1937),\u00a0The Forest Opera in Sopot\u00a0(1937),\u00a0Patrycja Newey in \u201cTosca\u201d\u00a0(1953),\u00a0Altar Boys\u00a0(1955),\u00a0Red Caf\u00e9 (1956),\u00a0Still Life\u00a0(1956),\u00a0Sea Landscape (1961),\u00a0Reception\u00a0(1963),\u00a0Mirror on a Wooden Door\u00a0(1964),\u00a0Old Woman\u00a0(1965),\u00a0Flowers in a Vase\u00a0(1966),\u00a0Armchair and a Frosted Glass\u00a0(1975),\u00a0On a Scaffolding\u00a0(circa 1978),\u00a0A Young Man against a Red Background (1980),\u00a0Electric billiards\u00a0(1981),\u00a0Three Green Apples\u00a0(1982),\u00a0A White Vase\u00a0(1985), two Landscapes\u00a0(one of them monochromatic) (1987); and six watercolours from J\u00f3zef Czapski\u2019s undated notebook, given to Krystynia and Andrzej Wajda on 28 June 1984 during one of the visits at Maisons-Laffitte. The watercolours and inscription (\u201cTo my very dear Wajdas with all my gratitude and friendship J\u00f3zef Czapski, 28 VI 84.\u201d) were cut out from the notebook and framed in 1985 by Andrzej Wajda.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Most of Czapski\u2019s paintings that are currently found at the National Museum in Krakow come from the collection of Barbara and Richard Aeschlimann. Richard Aeschlimann, a Swiss painter, drawer and writer was Czapski\u2019s friend and art dealer. In 1976, together with his wife Barbara, he established the Plexus Gallery in Chexbres (Switzerland), wherein the late 1970s, he started organising exhibitions of Czapski\u2019s paintings. With the opening of the J\u00f3zef Czapski\u2019s Pavilion in 2016, the Aeschlimanns presented the National Museum in Krakow with their friend\u2019s 12 paintings. The paintings Sea Landscape and Flowers in a Vase were given to the museum by Maria Adela \u017bele\u0144ska, maiden name Bohomolec (Mysia) and W\u0142adys\u0142aw \u017bele\u0144ski, living in Paris, who were friends with Czapski. Maria translated into French Czapski\u2019s book The Inhumane Land (the book was published by Plon in 1949 titled\u00a0Terre inhumane, with a foreword by Daniel Hal\u00e9vy); W\u0142adys\u0142aw was a nephew of Tadeusz Boy-\u017bele\u0144ski, a lawyer and a journalist.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
