It was separated from the joinery workshop at the request of its then manager, Stefan Obrzut.

The workshop is responsible for the conservation of furniture and other wooden items held in all branches of the Museum. Conservation work is carried out on all types of such items dating from various historical periods. Both wooden furniture of various construction types and upholstered furniture are restored.

The complete conservation of a piece of furniture is a multi-stage process. Often, old varnish layers are removed, necessary joinery repairs are carried out, and the wooden surface is then finished in a manner appropriate to the item in question. In many cases, the decoration of the furniture has been carried out using the techniques of marquetry or inlay. When restoring such pieces, various types of wood – often exotic – as well as other materials such as ivory, mother-of-pearl or metal are used to fill in any gaps.

Upholstered furniture often requires repair or reconstruction of the upholstery. Such work is also carried out in the Workshop, using natural filling materials and suitable fabrics. The surface of the furniture is usually finished by waxing or polishing to a high gloss.

The Team

Piotr Żurek – Restorer

Zbigniew Morawski – Workshop Manager

Wiesław Michalik – Senior Restorer

                <use xlink:href="#phone-icon"></use>

+ 48 12 433 55 87, + 48 12 433 55 88

MNK Main Building, 1 3 Maja Avenue

The Furniture Conservation Workshop at the National Museum in Kraków was established in 1966.
