The new Director greets the NMK visitors

On 1 January 2016, Dr Andrzej Betlej began his work as the Director of the National Museum in Krakow. He replaced Zofia Gołubiew, who served in this function for the last 15 years.
Dear Visitors,

I would like to greet you all very warmly. We are at the beginning of a new year – 2016 – so I wish you all great prosperity, joy, health and fulfillment of your dreams. I wish our Museum, which is also yours, great exhibitions, excellent publications and events.

I would like to meet your expectations and I want to assure you that I will do everything to make our museum even more attractive, open and friendly – a place to which you will want to return.

Dr Andrzej Betlej is an art historian, who from 2012 to 2015 served as the Director of the Institute of Art History of the Jagiellonian University. He is a specialist in the field of protection of Polish artistic heritage, particularly on the eastern territories of the former Commonwealth of Poland. He has authored and edited more than 100 monographs on this subject and on the history of cultural patronage and collecting in the contemporary Republic of Poland, as well as numerous publications devoted to modern art and Polish cultural heritage.

Director Betlej prepared more than twenty academic expeditions to Ukraine and several academic conferences. Since 2012, he has served as the Chairman of the Permanent Conference of Directors of Art History Institutes in Poland. He received the Szczesny Dettloff and Professor Jerzy Łoziński awards granted by the Association of Art Historians, as well as awards granted by the Minister of Science and Higher Education.

He is a member of the Wawel Royal Castle Museum Board, the Commission of Art History at the Polish Academy of Learning, the Committee on Art Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences , editor-in-chief of Modus. Prace z Historii Sztuki [Modus. Works on History of Art], a member of the Research Centres Evaluation Committee and an expert of the National Science Centre.
