The National Museum in Krakow declares institution's corporate social responsibility mission

The National Museum in Krakow, as one of the most important cultural institutions in the country, develops standards of operation that can become a model for other entities. One of the challenges associated with this role was to create a document regulating the obligations of the NMK in the field of social responsibility. As important as the new implementations are in this case, it is just as important to transparently communicate the changes being made. This was the purpose of the meeting and mission presentation that took place on October 6, 2022 at the MNK Main Building.
The choice of date was directly related to the mission: on the same day, the MNK hosted a conference and workshops, the final meeting of the international Spectrum Project dedicated to adapting institutions to the diverse sensory needs of people on the autism spectrum.

The document Museum - People - Future is the result of the work of a team consisting of male and female employees of various departments - its creation was preceded by an internal study of the museum's work. The content of the mission statement includes a summary of past activities at each level of the institution's work.

Understanding how the museum works as a complex mechanism helped to distinguish three pillars of social responsibility, within which the most important guidelines for development are organized. The development of the document is part of a step-by-step process that occurs in the organization and determines the next stages of change.

In working on the document, the MNK team used non-financial ESG (Environment, Social responsibility and Governance) criteria for assessing the performance of organizations, adapted to the circumstances of the public cultural sector. "We believe that paying attention to ESG elements will positively affect the performance and relationships within the organization, strengthen ties with audiences and partners, and give the Museum an impulse for development, resulting in a full opening to the diverse needs of visitors," the mission statement says.

The pillars of the Museum-People-Future mission are: accessibility, inclusion and building organizational governance based on responsible management. The document indicates the starting points and the three main challenges facing the institution: creating a museum that is fully accessible, collaborative and sustainable.
The National Museum in Krakow takes into account accessibility requirements in the modernization of its buildings, galleries, in the creation of an educational program and in the use of digital tools enabling the use of the collections by people for whom reaching its branches is difficult for various reasons.
The principle of cooperation-inclusion applies to the relationship between the MNK and those around it. The presence of this institution in the life of the city is, on the one hand, the building of expertise by museum professionals, and on the other, the inclusion and involvement in its activities of both people with difficult access to cultural facilities as well as for organizations and institutions focused on working with specific audiences. MNK invites people to participate and share experiences, opening itself to collaborations with professionals and specialists.
In terms of sustainable management, the Museum-People-Future mission refers to MNK as a workplace for many people, using equipment, materials and resources in different ways.
