Good Practices - education project

A cyclical education programme that is a result of many years’ collaboration between the Institute of Pedagogy at the Jagiellonian University (UJ) and the Education Section of the National Museum in Krakow.
The programme, which forms part of Dr Renata Pater’s (UJ Institute of Pedagogy) original research project "Edukacja muzealna w Krakowie" (Museum Education in Krakow), is implemented at the Museum in cooperation with Anna Grzelak and Jagoda Gumińska (Education Section of MNK). Participants in the Programme include third-year students of UJ Institute of Pedagogy (speciality: Social and Cultural Animation), completing internships required for the Museum Education module, and the invited nursery and primary school teachers from Krakow and its surrounding areas.

The schools (teachers and pupils), the university (lecturers and students) and the Museum (museum educators) worked together for several months to develop classes that take into account the needs and abilities of all concerned parties. Museum workshops led by students are held in the Museum’s exhibition spaces under the supervision of experienced educators. While working on the scenarios, students learn about museum collections, the specifics of interacting with visitors, as well as the expectations of the participating teachers and the perceptual abilities of the pupils.

In 2014 the programme was attended by pupils of the Primary School in Bibice, Primary School no. 152 in Krakow, Special Primary School No. 44 in Krakow, and the Lower Secondary School in Bibice. Museum activities were held at the Gallery of 19th-Century Polish Art in Sukiennice and the Jan Matejko House.
