Crisis and Prosperity – film workshops for youth

Crisis and Prosperity – film workshops for youth

As part of the project Crisis and Prosperity, we have invited students from lower and upper secondary schools to take part in film workshops in the Emeryk Hutten-Czapski Museum.
The aim of the project was to educate the youth in the field of film, history and economy and to promote the numismatic collections of the NMK. Film workshops were free of charge for the participants and lasted from March to June 2015. They were attended by 15 people from various schools in Krakow and its vicinity (Miechów). The educational project included teaching content from the field of entrepreneurship, social studies and history.

The workshops were artistically supervised by Ms Aleksandra Kułakowska and Ms Joanna Tarko, who enabled the workshop participants to familiarize themselves with the basics of filmmaking and its language. The necessary factual information on the content of the film was provided during a meetings with the experts: a historian (Mr Grzegorz Szymanowski), a numismatist (Mr Bartosz Dziewanowski-Stefańczyk) and an economist (Mr Krystian Mucha). Based on the knowledge they imparted, the participants developed two screenplays. Both were created in the form of five-minute-long educational films on the topic related to prosperity and crisis in modern times, in the 16th and 17th centuries in the Polish Republic. The subject was predetermined, yet the students were free to choose the form of the film, the language for the dilogues and the set design. As a result, although the movies were thematically rooted in a particular historical epoch, they were presented through the eyes of young people, reflecting their interests and sensitivity. The project participants spent four shooting days on the film set, organized the costumes and set design, and created acting performances. They had the opportunity to use a digital video camera and learned the basics of cinematography (issues referring to the lenses, lighting, composition and image design).

For the youth, our museum became a space where ideas were born and where they could discuss them, learn to solve problems and work in teams – the work of each person was essential for the final form of the film. In addition, working on the set provided an opportunity to take a closer look at the numismatic items and expand one's historical knowledge.

The films acquired their proper and final form during the editing class. Workshops ended with an official premiere combined with handing out diplomas.
