Carried by the Red-and-White Flag

Carried by the Red-and-White Flag

A project prepared by the teaching staff of the Kornel Makuszyński Primary School No. 129 in Krakow to commemorate three patriotic events: the 220th anniversary of the Battle of Racławice, the Day of the Flag, and the adoption of the Constitution of 3 May.
Training workshops for teachers were held at the Jan Matejko House and the Gallery of 19th-Century Polish Art in Sukiennice (February 2014) as part of the project. The workshops resulted in the development of plans of special museum lessons providing an opportunity to visit the two above-mentioned branches of the National Museum in Krakow on the same day.

The class teams participating in the project prepared tableaux vivants after paintings by Jan Matejko. The final show of selected works – photographs of the tableaux – was held on the anniversary of the victorious Battle of Racławice, 4 April 2014, at the Gallery of 19th-Century Polish Art in Sukiennice, against the backdrop of the original paintings by Matejko.

During the course of the project, two interschool art competitions were also held for children of Krakow’s primary schools: Malarska wizja dzieła Jana Matejki Kościuszko pod Racławicami [An Artistic Impression of Jan Matejko’s Painting Kościuszko at Racławice] and Kartka z Racławic [A Postcard from Racławice].

The people involved in the project are:
  • teaching staff of t Primary School No. 129 in Krakow
  • Beata Ciepły (Primary School No. 129 in Krakow) – project creator and coordinator
  • Anna Grzelak and Jagoda Gumińska - Education Section of the National Museum in Krakow
